Elementary Montessori is a self-paced method allowing each child to work at his or her individual academic level. Children are encouraged to develop academically as well as to develop personal skills such as time management, conflict resolution, responsible decision making and grace and courtesy. |
The Elementary Program of Alpharetta International Academy is comprised of children in first, second and third grade. First priority is given to children promoting from Alpharetta International Academy's own Primary classrooms, followed by Elementary-age children transferring from other Montessori schools. If space allows, other children will be considered on a case by case basis. Our core curriculum for both Language and Math is the Albanesi Curriculum Program developed specifically for the Montessori classroom. Students continue to learn new concepts using concrete Montessori materials, however, they also work towards the abstract understanding of these concepts in both Language and Math. Other relevant Language and Math work supplement the Albanesi curriculum. Students learn different methods of research in order to complete reports and presentations on a variety of topics. Whenever possible field trips and visitors to our classroom are planned to support related areas of study. Additional areas of study include: Social Studies - Topics include communities, government and elections, famous Americans, Native Americans, U.S. Presidents, Georgia, recycling and conservation, land and water forms, geography and cultures. The children are also free to research additional subjects that many interest them, and present this information to the class. Science - We will study various aspects of science including Botany, Biology, Physical Science and Chemical Science. Some themes are studied together as a group, although children may also choose science work that is available on the classroom shelves. Themes we may follow include: Plants, Living and Non-living, Floating and Sinking, Magnetism, The Body, Weather, Chemical Reactions, Volcanoes, Hemispheres, Rocks and Animals. Foreign Language - Elementary children have Spanish or French instruction twice a week from native speaking instructors. Shelf work is also available for daily work in the classroom. Physical Education - In addition to daily playground time, the Elementary children have P.E. twice a week. The skills covered include throwing and catching, bat and ball skills, soccer, jump rope, racing, general fitness and various team and group games. Computer Lab - The Elementary Classroom contains a computer lab, allowing children to research projects and work on software that compliments other classroom subjects. |
